3 Tips for Sympathy Gifting

3 Tips for Sympathy Gifting

2020 - wow. What a year it has been so far. The entire world is experiencing something that very few of us saw coming. Plans have been canceled. Weddings have been rescheduled. Gatherings with family & friends have been postponed. It's been a year of change, disappointment, loneliness, and for many - loss.

Typically when someone that we love is experiencing grief, we drop what we are doing and run to their side to comfort them. Nothing can replace that in person hug. But as Covid-19 continues to be a threat, sadly we are now forced to find other ways to be there for them from a distance. There are the obvious choices - flowers, a card, a meal drop off. A kind gesture that will be noticed, but then will be lost in the sea of flowers, cards, and meals that others have delivered with the same good intentions as you.

Or you can send a gift that will give them pause. A moment away from the heaviness. Curated with a few things that are sure to lift their spirits, and will be a reminder of your love for them.

Sadly, we have sent more sympathy bocus than we can even count this year. Each one that we've wrapped up and each card that we've written with your thoughtful notes has weighed heavy on our heart. We've learned a thing or two about how to thoughtfully gift; here are a few tips:

1) Make it about them. Think about their interests, and what "self-care" means to them. At the end of the day, you want to send them a gift that will encourage them to take a moment for themselves. Maybe for you, it's a bubble bath and a face mask, but for them, it's delicious coffee and a good book.

2) Time it right. The initial days of grief are overwhelming and often filled with an outpouring of support. Wait about a week or so before sending your gift. It will come at a time when their life starts to go "back to normal" and they could use the extra pick me up.

3) The card. We're sharing one of the most eloquently written messages that we have seen recently. Sometimes you just don't know what to say, but we think that this perfectly says it all.
"Wishing you peace to bring you comfort, courage to face the days ahead, and loving memories to forever hold in your heart. I am so incredibly sorry for your loss."
